Work Totes That Hold Their Value: The Investment Bags Worth Carrying
After analyzing millions of resale data points, we have the stats on what bags hold their value best over time
If you’re anything like me, you want a work tote that feels equal parts functional and luxurious. One that makes you feel like a boss, and getting out the door for the day just a little more enticing - bonus points if it retains value for resale down the line. Not every tote fits the bill, though, and after analyzing millions of resale data points, we have the stats on what bags hold their value best over time.
Let’s break down some of the top work totes whose price tags actually match the value they maintain.
It's obvious to us that luxury brands (like the Hermès Birkin) are solid investments, and hold a great deal of their value, but many of the bags with the strongest resale potential may surprise you. This is often dependent on the quality of materials, and ability of the bag to stand the test of time and wear.
One bag with incredible resale value that was a real standout for me… that I may have just also purchased, while researching this story. Is the Cuyana classic easy tote, which holds 83% of its value and resells for around $222 on average. I am obsessed with the classic design, plus I feel smart with my use of money based on the quality of materials, customer reviews, AND knowing this holds most of its value if I change my mind in a few months. Understanding resale insights has been a huge unlock for me and I just got pinged by a beta user who actually bought the Cuyana bag instead of a similar Everlane tote, which holds less than a 50% resale value. This only reaffirms my decision-making.
Toteme T-Lock Bag Toteme has become synonymous with quiet luxury, and the T-Lock bag is no exception.
The sleek, structured design paired with minimal hardware makes it an ideal work tote that seamlessly transitions from the office to after-work drinks. Its resale value stays strong at 85% due to its classic appeal and limited seasonal shifts.
The Row Margaux Tote DUH! This bag is reselling for above its retail value, however is hard to cop, and comes with a price…Based on our research, the Margaux is the definition of investment dressing. Its clean lines, supple leather, and roomy interior make it a functional masterpiece. We’ve done the hunting for you, so you can explore the full resale array.ee top listings here!
One brand that was a shocker to me to discover the strong resale value of was Zadig et Voltaire. Le Borderline Bag as seen here has a resale value of 83% , and even slightly more used condition, similar styles from the brand resell for around $245.This brand has been around, and generally is sought-after for its pretty timeless, Parisian street style. The quality is consistent.
What Makes a Work Tote Hold Value?
Here’s what the strongest contenders from across our dataset have in common
Timeless Design: Minimal hardware, clean lines, and versatile colors perform better across our data set - unless its a limited-edition design or exclusive drop / collab (these outperform other items due to their rarity and relative scarcity)
Quality Materials: Full-grain leather, suede, and other premium materials are most desirable, and hold up best. Longevity, and condition are key.
Brand Legacy: Established legacy brands with a track record of quality and exclusivity perform better - the all time example of this being the Birkin! - but trusted, venerable brands like Reformation and even Patagonia also hold incredible resale value because of their inherent quality and thought-through, durable materials.
When choosing a work tote, think beyond the trend cycle. These pieces aren’t just bags—they’re assets (read more about “alternative investments” aka bags in our last post, here, if you want to be the smartest person at the dinner table).
I love zadig and voltaire!! Their bags are super high quality at a price point I can actually afford - I have three bags from them (tiny, normal purse, tote!) and have been using them for years!
